EMF and Devices Explained

Not all devices generate EMF the same way, and not all of them are used the same way, either. Understanding how each device works, and how people actually hold and use it day to day, helps explain why proximity and usage habits matter just as much as the device itself when thinking about everyday exposure.

Phones

Phones send and receive signals constantly to stay connected to cell towers and WiFi, cycling through connection checks even when you're not actively using an app. Usage habits like calls held directly to the ear, or scrolling in bed with the phone inches from your face, mean sustained close-range contact for hours across a typical day. Because phones are carried in pockets and held in hands more than almost any other device, they tend to be the first device most people think about.

Laptops

Beyond WiFi and Bluetooth signals, laptops also generate EMF from internal components and charging circuitry, which is notable given how often they're used directly on the lap. Working from a couch or bed with a laptop resting on your legs for an hour or more at a stretch is common, and that kind of sustained, close physical contact is part of why laptops are treated differently than, say, a desktop computer that sits several feet away on a desk.

Routers

Routers broadcast a WiFi signal continuously, 24 hours a day, and are often placed in high-traffic areas of the home like living rooms, home offices, or bedrooms for convenience. Unlike a phone or laptop, which is picked up and put down throughout the day, a router simply runs nonstop in the background, which shifts the relevant factor from closeness to duration.

Wearables and Tablets

Smartwatches sit against the skin for hours at a time, including overnight for people who use sleep-tracking features, making them one of the closest devices to the body of any category. Tablets, meanwhile, are frequently held close to the face and body during reading, video calls, and streaming, and are used for extended sessions by both adults and kids. Both device types are worth the same consideration as phones, even though they're sometimes overlooked.

The Common Thread: Proximity and Duration

Across all device types, the two biggest factors are how close the device is to your body and how long you're near it each day. A router several feet away that runs all day and a phone held to your ear for a ten-minute call represent very different combinations of proximity and duration, and that's exactly the kind of nuance worth understanding rather than treating every device the same way.

That's also the thinking behind applying protection to the devices you use most, for the longest stretches, rather than trying to cover every electronic item in the house at once. Starting with the devices that combine the highest proximity and the longest daily use, typically phones, laptops, and wearables, tends to be the most practical approach for most households.

Household Patterns Worth Noticing

Every household uses devices a little differently, and it's worth taking stock of your own patterns rather than assuming a generic list applies evenly to everyone. A remote worker who spends eight hours a day on a laptop has a very different device profile than someone who mostly uses their phone for texting and the occasional call. Families with school-age kids often see tablets and laptops used for hours at a stretch for homework and remote learning, while a single professional living alone might have a much heavier phone-and-laptop combination and barely touch a tablet at all.

Thinking Beyond a Single Device

It's also worth remembering that most people aren't using just one device in isolation. A common evening scenario might involve a laptop open on the coffee table, a phone in hand, and a router broadcasting from across the room, all at the same time. Rather than viewing each device as a separate decision, many households find it simpler to think in terms of the rooms or times of day where the most devices overlap, such as a home office during work hours or a bedroom at night, and prioritize protection accordingly.
